Leaders in Change
As leaders, we are often at the forefront, guiding strategic change. Whether in the context of setting a new strategic direction, shepherding the execution of strategic priorities, or leading an organization-wide change initiative, senior leaders are change-makers.
For many in our organizations, change can be exciting and anxiety-provoking at the same time.
As leaders, we are well-served to consider the sequencing and impact of major change efforts on those vital to bringing the change to fruition.
As creators of change, we often have grappled with the subject matter for months prior to enacting the change effort. Be it a new program, strategic partnership, or major improvement. We have had time to consider alternatives, examine costs and benefits, and ultimately reach an informed decision to proceed.
We are wise to build in ample “processing time” for those who will be on the receiving end too. Providing the time, space, and sometimes resources to contemplate:
- How will this change impact my program and my work?
- How will I incorporate this new situation into my existing routines?
- Will I need to learn new skills, new technologies, or interface with new people?
- Who will I go to as I have questions or if I run into issues?
These are but a few of the considerations staff may have relative to a new endeavor.
As a life-long change-maker myself, I am continually assessing people’s readiness for change – whether at an organizational level, group level, or personal level.
Change is inevitable, and to me energizing. And, I recognize that different people have different appetites for change.
Leaders who are skillful in guiding significant change efforts, tune in to the impact on others. Yes, a change may be essential and urgent, but humans need an adjustment period. Time to integrate the new situation into their norm. Time to internalize new skills. Time to reach a new equilibrium.
