Two Thinkers Who Will Expand How You See Strategy & Measurement

Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of knowing and following the work of two exceptional thinkers: Stacey Barr and Andrew Hollo. Interestingly, they both hail from Australia, and their work has global influence. Their insights have improved organizational strategy and performance measurement. If you haven’t encountered their work yet, allow me to introduce you.

Stacey Barr: Measurement That Matters

Stacey Barr is a true specialist in performance measurement. She emphasizes the importance of creating meaningful metrics that truly reflect an organization’s strategic direction. In her book Prove It!: How to Create a High-Performance Culture and Measurable Success, she advises:

The first mindset to start with is ‘Results, not actions’. It means writing strategic goals that are results-oriented, not action-oriented. Goals should describe the outcome we want, not the actions we want to take.”

Stacey challenges leaders to avoid vague language in their strategic goals and instead focus on clear, measurable outcomes. Her approach to performance measurement is both elegant and systematic. It fosters a culture of organizational learning and continuous improvement.

She is simply the best of the best!

In addition to her books, she shares insights on her Measure Up blog, where she dives into practical steps to move beyond the ordinary to develop meaningful performance measures for what matters most.

Andrew Hollo: Achieving the Impossible

Andrew Hollo specializes in strategic transformation, guiding organizations to achieve significant change. In his book From Impossible to Possible, he emphasizes the importance of making strategic choices that align the entire organization:

“Strategy is not about making more plans; it’s about making better choices—decisive, courageous, and transformative choices that align the entire organization.”

Andrew encourages leaders to think beyond current limitations and focus on impactful, long-term results.

In his 5 Minute Strategic Mindset blog, he models how to find connections between seemingly disparate concepts. A key ingredient for strategy development. His writing is direct, thought-provoking, and packed with real-world illustrations.

What I appreciate most about Stacey and Andrew are their transformational approaches described in very practical ways. They prompt us to ask critical questions…
